When You Need to Replace Brake Pads

When it comes to your car, several components play a vital role in keeping it running safely. One such major part that keeps both- your car and life safe is the brake pads. Keeping your car’s brake pads in proper working condition and replacing them at the right time not only save your money but also prevents life-threatening accidents. These are a key part of your vehicle’s brake system and need periodic maintenance and even replacement. Every car owner knows how important brakes are but nobody considers brake maintenance or replacement until something goes wrong. The brake system is a complex network of parts that gets into action when you press the brake pedal. To keep the system working optimally, each part of the brake system needs to be taken care of. And one such component that needs your attention is the brake pads.

When the driver hit the brake, the brake pads contact the rotors to create friction for stopping the car. Over time, they start wearing out and eventually get damaged to the extent that it prevents brakes from creating the needed friction. This can be a dangerous situation that could possibly lead to a fatal accident. So, to avoid such a situation, it’s recommended to replace brake pads every 50,000- 70,000km. Besides this, some more warning signs indicate something is wrong with your brake pads and you need to get them checked and possibly replaced. Here are some signs that mean it’s time to get new brake pads.

Strange Noises

When brake pads get deteriorated, you could start hearing unusual noises. If a persistent squeaking or squealing sound is coming from the brakes, don’t avoid it. Sometimes, due to weather conditions like rain, brakes make a squeaky sound. But if the weather isn’t the issue, you need to get the brakes checked. A screeching sound often arises from small metallic shims when you apply the brake.

Indicator Light Turns On

Most of the latest car models are designed with built-in brake pads and “wear indicators”. If you see the indicator light turned on, it means it’s time to replace your brake pads. This happens in cars that have a sensor on the bake pad to detect worn-out components. If the indicator light is on, it means the pads have worn down and need to be replaced soon. You could also hear a grinding noise that could indicate a more severe issue involving brake pads, discs, and rotors.

 Vibration or Thin Brake Pads

If you feel vibration when you apply brakes or it takes longer than usual to stop the car, it is a clear indication to replace your old brake pads. When brake pads are worn down, it could get challenging to stop your car or you could feel the vibration as you press the brake. To prevent any serious accident, get the brake system checked. Moreover, if brake pads appear less than a ¼ inch thick, they need to be replaced soon. You or a mechanic can inspect the brake pads to find out if they have become too thin.
