How To Know It’s Time To Change Your Car’s Oil?

The engine oil is essential to lubricate the moving parts of the vehicle’s engine. It is the oil that keeps the engine running smoothly. Oil is typically required for the operation of all engines. So, whether you’re using a motorcycle, car, generator, or even a lawnmower, you need good quality engine oil for lubrication. This is because an engine comprises parts that are constantly moving and rubbing against one another. The constant rubbing generates heat due to friction. When oil circulates through these moving components, it helps in absorbing heat and prevents overheating. However, the oil in the engine doesn’t last forever.

You need to get the oil changed by taking your vehicle to an automobile service center. An engine oil change is usually a quick and painless procedure. However, ignoring this routine maintenance task can lead to costly repair because dirty oil or low oil level can harm your car’s engine. So, when it’s time to change engine oil? The number of miles you can go between oil changes is determined by the model and age of your car. Looking at the label or documentation from your previous oil change can help you find out when your automobile is due for one. It should tell you what date or mileage you need to bring the car in for an oil change. In addition to this, here are some more signs that indicate your vehicle needs an oil change.

Changed Color & Texture

When oil gets dark and dirty, it’s time to replace it. Fresh oil is somewhat transparent and has an amber color. But when you drive the car and oil is circulated, it fills up with particles collected from the engine and gets darkens. To check if the color has changed, you need to be attentive and inspect engine oil at least once a month. Remove the dipstick and wipe it clean before replacing it in the oil tank. Now remove it a second time. If the dipstick cannot be seen through the oil, it is time for an oil change.

Engine Noise

Clean engine oil forms a layer that acts as a thin barrier between engine elements, preventing metal-on-metal contact. Proper lubrication helps in keeping your engine quiet on the road. But when the fluid degrades, it fails to lubricate the parts, resulting in engine noise. If left unchecked, you will notice banging, rumbling, and even roaring noises. All these odd sounds indicate that your vehicle is in desperate need of an oil change.

Oil Smell or Exhaust Smoke

Another problem linked to engine oil is leaks. When there’s an oil leak, you may smell oil inside your automobile. There could be a gas smell or exhaust fumes that shows your car may be overheated. In either case, you should schedule maintenance right away. Your car’s exhaust will always emit some translucent vapor, but if this turns to smoke, it’s time for an engine inspection. Besides these signs, you should also keep an eye on the mileage. Ideally, oil should be changed every 3,000 miles or three months.
